A Good Weekend, Jason Grilli and the Tigers Sign Their Draft Pick

While 15 runs in two games is hardly an offensive onslaught, it was good enough for the Tigers to blowout the just as bad Seattle Mariners this weekend. We dropped the first game on Friday, but bounced back to win our last two games.

Jason Grilli made his first career start on Saturday and really shined. I know the Mariners aren’t great, but anytime you can hold a major league team to two hits through seven innings, you have to be impressed. Jason Grilli won the third and final game for the Mud Hens as they won the Governors Cup (International League World Series).

The Tigers would have to take all four against the White Sox to finish the season above .500 at home. They need one home win to match last years total of 38.

The Tigers signed their first round draft pick Cameron Maybin. Definitely good news, and it’s expected that he’ll play A ball next year. He got a nice chunk of change as his signing bonus was $2.65 million.

The Tigers have a chance to make an impact on the playoff picture this week when they square off against the White Sox. Heck, I guess no matter what happens, win or lose, it will have some kind of impact. The Tigers haven’t had much luck against the White Sox this season, so it’d be nice to see them turn it around now. Better late then never.

Bah, humbug… A perfectly good chance to jump another spot in next year’s draft order gone to waste. And this with our magic number over Tampa and Colorado down to just 2, meaning that overtaking them is unlikely… We had a shot at the 5th draft spot staring us right in the face, and we blew it. And we’ve still got to make sure and out-lose the Dodgers to even retain 6th. And don’t count out the free-falling Orioles… We’re only 1 game ahead of them.

I’ll take the hit in the draft to see the White Sox and their piece of crap broadcast teams whine and complain. I hate the White Sox, and they deserve to lose. I’d forfeit our first round pick altogether to see them fail. It would be glorious.

As for Grilli, what’s to get excited about? He’s going to be 29 years old soon, and he was middling in Toledo this year. Are you looking for another Mike Maroth? Pitchers with so so walk and strikeout rates aren’t ahrd to come by. I wouldn’t get my panties in a bunch over 4 strikeouts and 4 walks in 7 innings.

I’m glad they signed Maybin. There’s no reason to start getting cheap now.

Are you watching this game right now? Jason Grilli looks awful, just terrible. He has this brutal hanging curve, and he has no clue where he’s putting the fastball. The Sox are just sitting back and seeing the ball really well. This cannot end well.

So what’s good about a 29 year old starter who doesn’t get strikeouts?

It’s the Tigers and a team that will eventually lose to the Yankees in the playoffs. If this weren’t the only game going right now, I wouldn’t even be paying attention.

Two loser teams. You should throw in the Red Sox and make it a loser party.

Why did Thames not pinch hit in this game? Why is Dmitri Young coming in to pinch hit when he hasn’t seen the field in several days? What is the point of bringing up Thames if you’re going to let Pena bat against Neal Cotts? I’m tired of this crap.
