Life After Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez

While this isn’t encouraging, it’s definitlely something to think about over the next couple of offseasons.  Kevin Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus listed the top 15 catching prospects.  None of them are Tigers, although if memory serves me right, the Tigers used a higher draft pick in this most recent draft on a catcher.  Regardless, as Pudge gets a little older, it’s something Dave Dombrowski has to consider, if not this winter, then next.

Not this draft, but in 05 they took Chris Robinson in the 3rd round. He is 22 and not showing much power at Lakeland. In just over 200 AB’s his line is .261/3.19/.330

We have zero players that even come close to resembling catching prospects. We’ll need to do something about this very soon, since next year is the last of Pudge’s 4-year deal…

But, we have a ton of pitching prospects who can be traded to fill any current hole.

We’ll also be losing around $10 million in payroll once Pudge’s contract expires too. So you’d hope we’d be able to buy someone and still come out ahead.

Yeah, it’s probably best to rent a catcher than it is to grow your own.

Too bad Maxim St. Pierre didn’t work out. It would have been cool if there was a Major League All-Stat named Maxim St. Pierre.
